I think of photography and storytelling being like oxygen - they breathe life into the world and are an absolute necessity

Bio

Serena Stevenson is a photographer, film maker and multi-media creative that uses her work not only to create some pretty stunning projects, but in most cases to change the world one frame at a time. In many cases the beauty of her work can be attributed to her determined hold of her vision to bring the world together through emotive stories, and the relationships she builds with the subjects of her work.

Creator Statement

Until I discovered my K1000 SLR camera at age 17, I felt a distance from the world around me. Photography gave me a new perspective, and to me it quickly became a language which connected people, places, memories and stories all over the world. I’ve spent twenty years producing and directing documentaries and advertising campaigns, my camera always by my side. I believe that a sense of belonging is fundamental to life on this planet and I seek to capture that on film. My work is characterised by nostalgia, compassion and beauty, which creates highly credible imagery. Being half Italian and raised in Auckland has instilled in me a great faith in humanity. I love the spontaneity of the diverse world we live in, where belonging is everywhere. In everything I produce there is a positive outlook with emotion driven purpose. I have a strong belief that story is in everything. Story with direction and purpose is the doorway to optimism. There is more to brand and stories than a superficial look may suggest. Any story can be bought to life with the right team and the right outlook. My Nonna (Grandmother) came from Calabria, Italy to Melbourne after the War WW2 for a better life. She lived, loved and worked in a foreign land with her husband and ten children to build a future. From this I learned the value of simplicity and it is my aim to always find the simple solutions in work and life. Share your story and with great care I will create an innovative campaign with a powerfully moving narrative. No matter how the channels change, emotive storytelling will always be at the core of my purpose. For me it’s not only about product, service, or brand. It’s about fun, life, love, sharing, listening, giving, and belonging through connective experience.

      Speak Sleep – Morocco

      $375.00

      Poem:

I followed you looking for adventure
weaving in and out of fear and excitement
tiled palace in pink floyd rest
      I was your guest

Being in Morocco for the first time took me to another level of independence, again completely by myself but not alone. The Moroccan’s were so hospitable I never slept in my booked accommodation. One night it was on a terrace roof top with 7 daughters aged between 1 and 14. I’d just that day spent time with a family I meet on a bus, documenting the sacrifice of a goat for the naming of their new born. later I was walking through the Medina, and I met a young man. We talked and he invited me to his place, so I followed him. It was getting dark and like always I trusted my intuition. But still walking far back enough to dart down another small lane if I felt unsafe.
We got to a small carved wooden door, I followed into an old palace, tiled with the blue of magic art in each piece. That night we ate, listened to my old teenage fav Pink Floyd and smoked Moroccan hash. This young man was polite and engaging, we exchanged stories of our very different upbringings.

      Speak Sleep – Laos

      $375.00

      Poem:
helping, by myself, but not alone
      laos, laos, laos
      wrap me in mountain monsoon
      wrap me in smile face
loas, loas, loas, I rest my head in giving back

I traveled to Laos on my own to research and document the goings on in the boarders between Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. In while in Laos I got stuck in the monsoon high up in the mountains for 48 hours with no food and no way out, (on a very basic old local bus, where the rain fell on the inside). There were no other foreigners and no way out it seemed. During this time, I was referred to as Farlang (Foreigner), I asked to be called my name, Serena. I learnt about human equality and bravery here. I ended up hitchhiking out of there and took a mother and young boy with me (the bed here I slept in the night before this adventure).
